Alleged to be an Englishman, but actually an Englishman. At the time mentioned above, I was released and taken to the French Hospital, suffering from a very bad cold, in order to recuperate. I had spent the previous winter in Shanghai and was quite unwell. Having left the French Hospital, I intended to leave for Europe, but was brought before the Magistrate (Mr. Moral) on a charge of assaulting a Chinese man. Upon enquiring about my nationality, I replied that I was an Englishman, and was prepared to ratify the same on oath, but he kindly answered that my word was sufficient. We then discussed the case, and he told me he would postpone it for a week, and that I would be kept in H.M.'s Gaol for safe-keeping.
This was on the 21st March 1892. The case was brought up, but was postponed again due to the time not being suitable. I was informed that Judge Goodwin had taken over my case and that he alone was responsible for my stay in Her Majesty's Gaol. I was visited by that gentleman (Mr. Goodwin, I believe), who told me that I would not be troubled, as I had occasion to complain of the treatment I received in Her Majesty's Gaol. I was suffering...
